What "Independently Tested" Actually Means
July 14, 2026 · 4 min read
"Tested" is a word that appears on nearly every supplement label. "Independently tested" is a narrower, more meaningful claim—it means the testing was done by a third-party lab, not solely by the brand or its own manufacturer.
What "independent" is actually ruling out
In-house testing is not automatically dishonest, but it does mean the same company selling the product is the one grading its own work. Independent testing removes that conflict of interest by putting a separate lab in charge of verifying identity, purity, and contaminant levels.
What a genuine testing claim should specify
- What was tested for — identity, purity, heavy metals, and any other specific contaminants
- By whom — a named third-party lab, not just "a lab"
- Whether documentation (a Certificate of Analysis) is available on request
This is the standard we hold Unmade to: every batch independently tested for identity, purity, and heavy metals, with documentation available on request—not just a word printed on the label.
