Type I vs. Type III Collagen: What's the Difference

July 28, 2026 · 3 min read

Collagen is not one single molecule—there are at least 28 identified types in the human body, though most supplements focus on just two: Type I and Type III, because they are the most abundant and the best understood.

Type I

The most abundant type in the body overall. It is found throughout skin, tendons, bone, and connective tissue generally—it is the workhorse structural type.

Type III

Often found alongside Type I, particularly in skin and blood vessel walls. The two types tend to occur together naturally, which is part of why many collagen supplements—marine collagen included—are formulated to contain both rather than isolating one.

Why this matters when reading a label

A supplement listing "Type I & III" is describing the naturally-occurring composition of the source material, not an engineered blend. It is a reasonable, well-established starting point for a daily collagen ritual, whatever the source. Unmade's marine collagen is naturally Type I & III, exactly as it occurs in the wild-caught source—nothing isolated or re-engineered.
