Marine and bovine collagen are the two dominant sources in the supplement market, and the choice between them usually comes down to source preference, allergens, and how the peptides mix—not one being definitively "better" than the other.
The practical differences
- Source: fish (usually skin) versus cattle hide
- Collagen types: marine is naturally Type I & III; bovine typically includes Type I & III as well, sometimes with Type II depending on the cut used
- Mixability: marine collagen is often reported to dissolve more easily, likely due to smaller peptide size after processing
- Allergens: marine is unsuitable for fish/shellfish allergies; bovine is unsuitable for beef-derived sensitivities or certain dietary restrictions
What does not actually differ
Both are hydrolyzed collagen peptides, processed the same fundamental way regardless of source. Neither has a clearly established, universally agreed-upon advantage in effectiveness over the other—the research comparing outcomes between sources specifically is limited, and we are not going to overstate it here.
Why we chose marine
We chose marine collagen because wild-caught sourcing gave us a shorter, more traceable supply chain than we could build around cattle hide, and because it fits a broader range of dietary preferences (pescatarian, non-beef) that bovine collagen excludes by default. Unmade's peptides run low molecular weight—broken down small enough to dissolve cleanly in hot or cold liquid without clumping—and marine sourcing carries a meaningfully smaller carbon footprint than land-farmed bovine collagen, simply because there is no cattle farming behind it.
