Marine Collagen and Fish Allergies: What to Know

July 9, 2026 · 3 min read

Marine collagen is derived from fish, most commonly the skin, and is not suitable for anyone with a fish or seafood allergy. This is worth stating plainly and early, not buried at the bottom of an ingredient list. Unmade specifically is sourced from wild-caught deep-sea species—cod, haddock, and pollock—so if you know you react to any of those, or fish generally, this formula is not for you.

Fish allergy vs. shellfish allergy

These are distinct allergies, caused by different proteins. Someone with a shellfish allergy specifically (shrimp, crab, lobster) does not necessarily also react to fish, and vice versa—but if you have either, this is a conversation for your doctor before starting any fish-derived supplement, not a label you should self-diagnose against.

What we recommend

  • If you have any fish or seafood allergy, talk to your doctor before taking marine collagen
  • Check the full ingredient list yourself, do not rely on marketing copy alone
  • If in doubt, bovine collagen is the more common alternative source without the fish-allergen concern

We would rather lose a sale than have someone find this out the hard way.
